When it comes to marine coatings, Awlgrip is the gold standard for boat owners who demand durability, elegance, and long-lasting protection. Learn why professionals trust it and discover expert care tips to keep your boat looking flawless.
It’s one of those names that comes up again and again in marina and paint shop conversations. If you’ve ever admired the deep, mirror‑like shine on a freshly refinished yacht, there’s a good chance you were looking at Awlgrip. It’s more than just a marine coating - it’s a kind of shorthand for craftsmanship, durability, and has that elusive “showroom finish” boat owners obsess over.
Why Awlgrip?
Unmatched Durability: Awlgrip’s advanced polyurethane technology ensures superior resistance to UV rays, saltwater, and chemicals.
Brilliant Gloss: A professional-grade finish that retains its shine for years when maintained correctly.
Low Maintenance: Unlike traditional paints, Awlgrip requires minimal upkeep to stay pristine.
What Makes Awlgrip So Respected?
Awlgrip is a high‑performance polyurethane paint system designed specifically for the marine environment. Boats live hard lives: sun, salt, abrasion, constant movement. A coating has to be more than pretty - it has to be tough. Awlgrip built its reputation on finishes that stay glossy for years, resist chemicals and UV damage, and holds up under conditions that would make most household paints curl up and cry.
As professionals, we love it because it delivers consistent results when applied correctly. Our clients love it because it transforms a tired hull into something that looks brand new. But to keep that flawless look, proper care is essential - this guide covers the do’s and don’ts for long-lasting shine.

Caring for Your Awlgrip Finish: Do’s and Don’ts
Do's
Wash Regularly
Use Awlwash (73234) and fresh water to prevent dirt and grime build-up. Soft, non-abrasive cloths or mitts are best.
Rinse Thoroughly
After washing or using solvents, rinse with fresh water to remove residue that can damage the finish.
Protect with Awlcare
Apply Awlcare (73240) by hand to maintain gloss and shield against pollutants. It’s a non-abrasive polymer that lasts through multiple washes.
Use Approved Solvents for Stubborn Stains
For Awlgrip topcoat: Awlprep T0008, Awlprep Plus T0115, or mild solvents like mineral spirits for Awlcraft 2000 and HDT. Always test in an inconspicuous area first.
Dont's
Avoid Wax: Traditional waxes break down quickly, attract dirt, and can cause yellowing. Stick to Awlcare for protection.
No Abrasives: Scratch pads, polishing compounds, or aggressive cleaners will damage the finish.
Keep Away from Harsh Chemicals: Avoid bleach, ammonia, and citrus-based cleaners—they can cloud or scratch the surface.
Why Compounds Damage Awlgrip
Destroys the Resin Layer: Awlgrip relies om a thin, hard resin layer for it's high gloss finish. Compounds and abrasive pads cut through this protective layer, exposing the underlying pigment.
Permanent Dullness: Once this resin layer is removed the paint becomes porous, loses it's shine, and will require constant, high maintenance waxing or repainting.
Note: Using abrasives or compounds also voids the Awlgrip limited warranty.
Pro Tips for Longevity
Salt Removal: Use distilled white vinegar and hot water for stubborn salt stains, followed by Awlwash.
Seasonal Care: Apply Awlcare once or twice a year for added protection.
Prevent Moisture Damage: Don’t trap moisture under covers; ensure ventilation to avoid blistering.
Why Proper Care Matters
Awlgrip is an investment in beauty and performance. With the right maintenance routine, your boat will turn heads at every marina and withstand the toughest conditions without losing its shine.
Is Awlgrip DIY‑Friendly?
Awlgrip is famously unforgiving. It’s not the kind of paint you casually roll on over a weekend. Surface prep has to be meticulous. Application requires skill, the right equipment, and controlled conditions. Many yards won’t even let amateurs attempt it because mistakes are expensive to fix. But when it’s done right the results are spectacular!
